contents

One of the first printed works of this fictional genre can be found in the 15th century Le Morte d'Arthur, in French for "la mort d'Arthur". The book, published in 1485 by Sir Thomas Mallory (whose author is still in dispute), is a collection of stories, legends and folklore surrounding the exploits of King Arthur, who was believed to defend Britain against the Saxon invaders in the fifth or sixth century AD. It is a re-narration, re-imagining or reunification of oral traditions and divergent epic poems, and contains classic tales including Arthur receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake and the Knights of the round table in search of the holy grail. Through it all, the supernatural hidden in the known world, the charm of Merlin and the threat of the French giants establish the work in fiction. Unfortunately, the misogyny and fanaticism of this era were constantly on display. It dehumanizes Muslim figures, and when women are not marginalized, they are often presented as antagonists. The Dead Arthur is important to the genre for its longevity and has continued to inspire all kinds of artists, from Monty Python to Stephen King. This book, with its disputed authorship and mix of long-told stories, also testifies to the evolution of the fictional genre. This 500-year-old text mixing and matching its parts is the work of many, while creating new perspectives and using imaginative themes to explain human existence, in the same way the genre continues today
